Number One Issues Businesses and Corporations Face
by Motivational Keynote Speaker Maja Kazazic

Recently I was reading an article about top 10 issues businesses and corporations face. So I decided to do a little research on my own to find out — what are the top 10 issues? As I kept searching, all of the standard issues kept coming up….uncertainty, globalization, innovation, regulation, technology, diversity, supply chains, etc.

But in my mind, these are merely obstacles which we can easily overcome. I believe all businesses and corporations face only ONE real issue….well, besides cash flow…..and that issue is Strategic Thinking and Problem Solving. In fact article by BMGI Corporation said it best:

“The lack of sophisticated approaches to information acquisition, analysis and the development of unique insight leaves many companies at a disadvantage; they lack a long-term strategic imperative and instead jump from one strategy to the next on a year-to-year basis. Everyday problem-solving competency among today’s business leaders is also limiting their ability to adequately deal with the first nine problems. This is why corporate managers tend to jump from one fire to another, depending on which one their executives are trying to put out, and in many cases the fast-changing business environment is what ignites these fires in the first place. So what is the problem to be solved? We believe, to navigate the future, companies must resolve that strategic thinking and problem solving are the keys to successful business, then develop a robust capability at all levels.” *1

How do you get your team to to Think Strategically and Problem Solve?

First, you have to make sure they learned how to think for themselves. You would be surprise how trained we are on what to think and not how to think. Critical thinking is imperative in order to plan strategically and to implement a successful long and short term strategy. It’s like playing chess. You have to know your opponents and have the ability to “see the future” in order to play a winning strategy. So turn on your lightbulbs, think about the goal you want to reach, and start critically thinking about different options, scenarios and ways you can reach your goal. Pick the one that allows you fastest, easiest and best route to your goal with the least amount of casualties. And remember, like in chess, sometimes you may have to sacrifice the pawn to save the queen!

But let’s don’t forget problem solving. Today, it seems that, we are so concerned about job security, media, and other external influences that when a problem arises we are all very timid. We tip toe around it, avoid it as long as we can in hopes it will go away, or hope someone else will solve it. I believe that in the moment a problem is created, solution for that problem has also been created. It is our job to find that solution. In this approach, there is no need to question if a problem can be solved, you only questions, how. With this confident attitude it’s easier to jump in and face all issues head on without any fear because you are not questioning wether it can be done. And going in confidently to problem solve, combined with strategic planning will allow you and your team to stay ahead of competition and constantly reach new goals faster, easier and higher. Not to mention that all other “top 10 business problems” listed above (like uncertainty, globalization, etc) will becomes easily manageable obstacles allowing your company to concentrate on growth and conquering your competition!

Thinking strategically and problem solving is not a course your employees can take. Getting everyone to do this will require that you create a culture that rewards critical thinking and problem solving — both things most employees shy away from doing, because most corporate environment have created the culture of “it’s better to play it safe”.
